"Me as JC, 1973"

This photo was taken by my friend Bonnie during a group photo session with a few of my friends. As you can see, I had let my hair grow pretty long. I usually kept it in a ponytail or I used a head-band made out of a necktie. This was just before I moved back to Kalamazoo after living in Grand Rapids, MI for 5 years. (I went to Kendall School of Design there, studying painting and illustration. I dropped out after 2 years because I got interested in photography, which Kendall didn't teach at that time.) Grand Rapids is much more conservative than Kalamazoo, and my hair caused quite a stir. When I walked downtown, people would lean out of their cars to take my picture.
